Mercer Island
The floating jewel — rare intimacy at scale, with fast access to both Seattle and Bellevue now that the 2 Line is running.
by Amber Eckert
Mercer Island is an affluent, medium-sized city located in Lake Washington between Seattle and Bellevue, connected to the mainland on both sides via I-90. This highly sought-after zip code has a longstanding reputation for some of the most premier real estate in Washington. Business Insider ranked Mercer Island #27 best suburb in the U.S., and Money Magazine named it the best place to live in Washington.
The island has only grown in appeal over the years. Most recently, the 2 Line light rail — which began full cross-lake passenger service in March 2026 — has made Mercer Island more connected than ever while preserving exactly the peaceful, self-contained character that makes it so special.
In recent years, Mercer Island's town center has undergone a meaningful revitalization — it's now the island's go-to gathering place for shopping and dining, and the growing mix of walkable condos and apartments near the center appeals to those who want their favorite coffee shop within easy reach. Day-to-day life here feels especially convenient for a community that still reads as quiet and residential.
Island Life, Connected
Day-to-day life on Mercer Island has a rhythm that's both peaceful and surprisingly connected. The town center anchors social life — coffee, restaurants, and community events — while the residential streets stay quiet and tree-lined. The 2 Line light rail station means downtown Seattle and Bellevue are both quick, predictable commutes without ever leaving the island unless you choose to.
Lake, Trails & Town Center
Luther Burbank Park on the northern shore offers swimming, picnicking, an off-leash dog area, and stunning views back toward Bellevue. Mercerdale Park hosts community events and farmers markets. The Island Crest trail system and dozens of smaller parks give residents serious outdoor access without leaving the island. For dinner, the Mercer Island town center has matured into a genuinely strong dining scene.
